New Year's Day

He died on New Year's Day
My friend
I'd known him
Half his life
In fits and spurts
And stops and starts
And ages in between
Long before
He lost his legs
I knew him when he ran
While I stood still
And watched him fade
Till he came back again
When illness
Took some more of him
I could have stayed but left
And never said goodbye to him
Which I deeply regret.
He had so many friends
My friend
And I was oh, but one
Who loved him more
Than I realized
And now too late, he's gone.

  2. As I sit at my desk...at Mount Sinai Hospital....surrounded by those challenged by their disease, those fighting for their life in respiratory and those dealing with end of life in palliative your words are so, so beautiful....thank you and I am so sorry for your loss....

    1. Thank you for your words, Carol. He was my patient a long time ago, and then my friend. Working in healthcare doesn't make it easier when they go. xoxo

    1. Thanks, Mike. My friend's name was Mike too. He was larger than life and absolutely fearless. No one could keep up with his brilliance, including his poor body.
